“The Big Data of Life” is a website that examines, analyse and perform comparison data analysis on Open data from various governments, non-governmental organisation (NGO’s) and other sources. The big data of life website aims to highlights these complex issues and show hidden patterns affecting the London community through an interactive information display which will provide insights and thought- provoking in the ‘life’ of a community.
One of the key aim of this project is to develop a website to promotes, engage and sharing of knowledge, and information about big data and the implications.
This is a data portal provided to build a strong local community around creating valuable things and telling compelling stories within a community.
Also useful for data enthusiasts and makers who want to learn and develop an interactive data tools as well as providing guidelines and best practices in User Interface and User Experience. A step by step learning tutorials, documentations and video blogs to accomplish any resources to help make your own big data a reality and data manifestation of your imagination.
The ultimate aim of this project would be to become a portal of choice for collaborating with beginners, amateurs, designers, creators, data scientists and creative technologists in all works of life. PG05 PRACTICAL SUBMISSION DETAILS FOR Hamed Folarin
- To show evidence of my final practical project I have uploaded one promotional video:
Big data Website and D3 Promotion, author, 2015
The total length of the ‘big data Promotion is about 55 seconds (almost a minutes) which runs through the website and key features and functionality.
2. I have included 5 hi-resolution images which have been uploaded to mydropbox and can be viewed using this link:
My Personal Background:
My story in big data or associated information started in early childhood. For instance, If you pass an examine you move to the next class or grade. If not, you have to repeat the same class. This have a significant effect on the mindset, career development, social and well being of the individual concern and the community as a whole. In a bigger societal context, does that mean that failing schools, under privilege and disadvantage schools should be left to behind, whereas the rich, the super-rich and the affluent become richer and have all the privileges of the big society.
“Schools in the leafiest parts of the country may think they are doing extremely well, but they have an outrageously low number of pupil premium youngsters getting five good GCSEs. To have 65% of poor youngsters in Buckinghamshire failing to get 5 good GCSEs is a disgrace. Local authorities and schools need to understand that they cannot hide behind good headline figures if they fail a very large cohort of pupils.” – Mr David Laws (Minister for Education, 2013)
Are we creating trouble for the next future generations or vice versa. Or is there something we can do as an individual, society or community to improve this scenario.
During my master’s program, I realised that all of the postgraduates students came from different backgrounds and all over the world, but the same key issues and challenges. These were all professionals wanting to make social changes using their skills, experience and expertises to give something back to their own local communities. Their skills, inspiration, knowledge, resources and feedback wanted me to continue on this project.
These led to further questionings of my project objectives and goals such as , how can we improve the life in the community using already provided ‘big data’ information from different governmental agencies ?. How can we campaign for a better services in our community? How can we improve the educational services in a community. How can we campaign for a better services in our society and community, using emerging technology, big data information and Things of the Internet to deliver an improve services in the London community.
I started researching minimalistic and clean User Interface (UI) to create a simple yet functional experience for this web-based portal after discovering that existing websites were for high level professionals and technologists. These include visiting several learning sites, portfolio, collaborative and inspirational websites. My research also led to two main key findings, the transference International UK, an anti corruption agency which is called ukumaskthecorrupt and therefugeeproject which exaimined the plight of refugees worldwide. They both proved to be excellent resources and benchmark for my project development and portal.
TheRefugeeProject user interface is very simple UI with a black background with dynamic images and white text across the front page and at the same time, telling us the story and plight of refugees worldwide; the inhuman condition and historical factors. Whereas the ukumaskthecorrupt is a government funded project and also local to the UK market. This website uses a simple User Interface and bright and colourful orange for information display and getting user attention by overlaying the text with white colour. The user have the ability to customization viewing of the big data. This project examines corruption, money laundering and the impact of housing market in London boroughs where professionals, young professionals, and member of the local community were price out of the housing market.
Case Study 1: The RefugeeProject
I researched The Refugee Project which uses a simple user interface with black background and dynamic images of people in the community, and the same time telling us the story and plight of refugees worldwide; the inhuman conditions and historical factors.
Case Study 2: UKunmaskthecorrupt
I also researched the ukunmaskthecorrupt which is local project, also using a simple User Interface and brightful orange colour for information display and getting user attention by overlaying the text with white colour. The user have the ability to customization viewing of the data.
